I think its soo appropriate. I think its really good to discuss your personal life expereinces related to the degree.
Mkae sure you include a good understanding of the degree that your applying for, but definately include your own personal motivations and experiences.
Im applying for neuroscience, ive discussed my depression and personal life and how thats motivated me to want to learn more about mind and emotions, ive related it to the direction and details of the course it self, like specialisations and a phd topic that i may like to do. ive discussed somew of the books that ive read that really opened my mind to mind/body/ soul improvement. ive talked about the people that i ahve met in life and abroad that have really changed my whole psychology towards life.
questioning the spiritual and the scientifc, the unconscious, pain and love, laughter and sex, family ties and childhood, discussing their biological underpinings which is what neuroscience is all about, and then being able to relate to my life and what ive learnt so far (a levels, relationships, family and travels) and then what i would like to accomplish/ leran more about (discussing the components of the degree itself).
References :
hope this helps

Any creative ideas on how to start my UCAS personal statement?
I want to study Health and fitness and Im struggling to think of a good way to start it.

Also I have a passion for bodybuilding and fitness in general. Should I mention how I've been dedicated at bodybuilding for the last 2 years, and how much mass I have put on? Or is this innapropiate for a personal statement?
